Scarlet Fever Strikes High Point Furniture Market

Is your heart rate picking up? Do you feel a rush of adrenaline? A sudden burst of confidence?

The color red just may be responsible.

Sexy, dramatic and alluring, the color red is unique in its ability to elicit a physical response, say color experts. Certain shades of red actually impact heart rates, stimulate adrenaline glands and instill courage and confidence.

Since most of us could use some courage and confidence to meet the abundant challenges of today, it should come as good news that red will be one of the top colors in furniture at the High Point Market October 22- 27.  From bombe chests at Hooker Furniture to red leather sofas at Bradington-Young, furniture is red hot this fall. Furniture is right in step with fashion, with red a clear favorite in apparel these days. In fact, red was the color of the night at the recent 2011 Emmy Awards gala, when starlets ranging from Kate Winslet to Kathy Griffin to Kerry Washington and Lea Michele walked the carpet in red gowns.

Pure red is a slightly more intense version of Pantone’s 2011 Color of the Year, Honeysuckle, a dynamic reddish pink. Clearly the mother color of honeysuckle, red is simply a heated up version of the reddish pink shade. “Red is the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Red has an intensity that allures and engages and is encouraging and uplifting. Not only does red do a number on us physically…it elicits a deeply emotional response as well.

According to Michelle Lamb, director of The Trend Curve there also are some practical reasons for red’s rise in furniture. “First, corals (along with the pinkish red honeysuckle) have been so strong in the past year or so. Red is simply an intensification of this trend. Secondly, with so many neutrals returning, reds return as a classic punctuation mark to off-whites.”

Can your home use a punctuation mark anywhere? It looks like you’ll have plenty to select from based on the red finishes, fabrics and leathers that will be in abundance at the High Pont Market and coming soon to a store near you. Enjoy our video of just a sampling of some of the red-dressed home fashion for Fall 2011.
