When bigger is better: King-sized beds

Queen beds may be the most popular-selling bed size in America… but king-sized beds are the most dreamed about bedroom furniture!

Many of us first experience a king-sized bed in a hotel… beginning a lifelong love affair with the luxury of sprawling out, stretching our legs and getting an enviably restful night’s sleep.

Sleeping on a king-sized bed, in fact, can be a wake-up call – reminding us what it was like to be a kid again. As two adults sharing one bed, we adapt to sleeping in smaller spaces than we ever did as children. Twin-sized beds provide more sleeping area per person (39”) than both full-sized beds (27”) and queen-sized beds (30”). But a king-sized bed provides 39” per person; as much as a twin-sized bed.

With sleep stats revealing fewer – and less restful- sleeping hours for too many of us; a king-sized bed can make the most of our time in bed.

But there are other benefits to owning a king-sized bed.

If your master bedroom furniture is a magnet for kids or pets, a more generously-sized bed makes a lot of sense. Many new home and builders and remodelers suggest that today’s master bedrooms are more than a respite from a stressful world; they’re fast becoming grand central for family time on weekends or evenings (especially in homes with young families) with the bed an alternative to the living room sofa for TV-watching.

A king-sized mattress also guarantees a dramatic focal point. There’s no question that a large, comfortable-looking bed will be the ‘wow’ wall in a master bedroom – especially one with a beautiful design. With the growing popularity of king-sized beds, we’re seeing a broader range in style, quality and color than ever before. Some may prefer an always classic and romantic poster bed such as the above Sanctuary poster bed in ebony finish.

Or others may like a casual, coastal look like the Windward Raffia bed.

For those with elegant, sophisticated tastes, there’s the Sheridan leather bed.

Finally, king-sized beds can be easier to transport. A box spring is one of the largest and most awkward pieces of furniture you’ll ever own – or move! Unlike queen-sized mattresses, a king-sized mattress is typically supported by two smaller twin-sized box springs under the mattress.

If space and budget allow, a king-sized bed may well be the most comfortable and dramatic investments you make in your health and home.
