Geography & Geometry inspire fall furniture fashion

Global Style is the star of House Beautiful’s October issue

“Global Style” is the cover theme of October’s House Beautiful Magazine.

Taking inspiration from around the world, especially places like Morocco, India, Africa and Asia, global style mixes furniture, fabrics and accessories to create an exotic, well-traveled and  “collected” look. Ikats and Suzani patterns, Turkish motifs, Persian rugs and chinoiserie each lend their flair to this look.

At the same time, there’s a related trend in fashion and home décor for geometric motifs. The runways have been buzzing with geometrics. For example, this dress by Danish designer Malene Birger is black and white and geometric all over:

The parallels in ready-to-wear, furniture and fabrics are striking, as seen in this Kelsea chair from Sam Moore.

Or, as seen in this fun zig-zag pattern on the Antigo Chair from Sam Moore.

Accent furniture,  end tables, coffee tables, chests, credenzas and console tables also look to geometrics for inspiration, as seen in this Paxton chest.

The upcoming October High Point Furniture Market will join in the celebration of geography and geometry for home furniture fashion.

Geometrics and global motifs will especially star at Hooker Furniture and Sam Moore Furniture.

Sam Moore, in fact, will have an entire room of its High Point Market showroom in the International Home Furnishings Center devoted to a geometric theme. One of the features of this engaging room will be the new Darya club chair in a vibrant orange, white and gray geometric print chair.

Geometrics give classic furniture pieces like this chair and settee a pop of modern flair and whimsy. And, like color, geometrics appear in nature and are a common part of our everyday lives. Because we encounter geometrics all around us, they resonate at a deep level. Prediction: Geometric motifs in furniture and fashion will have staying power.

Geometrics flow seamlessly into the concurrent trend of globe-inspired looks. So many of the hallmark global patterns such as ikats, tribal-influenced patterns, Suzanis and Persian rugs are geometric in nature.

Along with ikat patterns, animal prints are often used to add an exotic (think Safari) element to world-traveled style, as seen in this Sam Moore sofa setting with a splash of ikat-patterned pillows and two chic animal print ottomans.

This “world-traveled” grouping from Sam Moore will be introduced at the October furniture market.

Also in the global theme, Hooker Furniture will introduce a globally-inspired dining group with a glamorous spin to our best-selling Sanctuary collection. This approach to global has an eclectic, casual feel with an unexpected glamorous spin through silver leaf accents and hardware.

As always, the greatest touches of style are in the details. What do you think of this striking look in exotic bunching dining room buffets with unique custom designed hardware inspired from a Turkish medallion and topped with elegant silver-leafed mirrors?

What do you think? Are you ready to brush up on your geometry and geography for home fashion? Would you welcome either geometrics or global looks into your home?

These geometrics really punctuate a room – love ’em!

Thanks for your feedback Kim. We agree that geometrics are a room’s punctuation point.
