Although our independent streak runs deep, no doubt about it–we Americans love the Brits. Ever since Paul, John, George and Ringo landed on American soil in the 60’s, we’ve been humming a happy little British tune. And why not? The Brits have `cool’ down in a way that makes us smile.
On the big screen, Colin Firth makes girls ’round the globe swoon (me, too) whether he’s Mr. Darcy, the object of Bridget Jones’ obsession, stuttering in The King’s Speech or the voice of sweet ol’ Paddington Bear (just announced).
Then there are the heavy-hitters who reign here, there and everywhere: Bond -James Bond- and the Queen.
And pop culture pin-ups, Prince William and Prince Harry (no worries–you can still marry Harry!).
Our kissing cousin Brits are ruling the waves of fashion here, too:
Cath Kidston is covering everything in sight (my iPhone, included) with fields of flowers in unexpected colorations and pattern pairings.
Hunter wellies are everywhere and people aren’t even waiting for rain to wear them.
But the real clue to me that that Brit style is here to stay was when hot-shot designer LuLu Guiness (whose tony bags cost more than my mortgage) turned up in JCPenney with bags we all can afford.
Now Brit style is coming home to roost, but with an American twist.
The Melange Union Jack chest reinvents the classic flag motif into a modern geometric pattern.
Are the British coming? Nah, they’re already here. Are we glad? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
