Trend Alert–Curves Ahead!

No more walking the straight and narrow line. This spring, furniture and interior designers are blazing a new trail with shapely silhouettes and curves that add architectural interest and pops of pizzazz. This is a fresh look, well-suited for homes of any style or size.

Although filled with lots of interesting design elements, this foyer’s undeniable focal point is a wasp-waist table whose shape resembles a tightly-cinched corset. Photo: Luke White, architecturaldigest.com

For example, see what happens in the foyer of this large Moscow home when Gabhan O’Keefe has its walls shaped to resemble rolls of padded white leather. They accentuate the slight curvature of the room and shapely catwalk overhead, while creating visual interest and texture in an unexpected way.

To break up the linear lines in his petite Paris apartment (once home to the novelist Colette), Jacques Grange thinks outside the box and adds a curvaceous 19th Century chaise lounge.

Curves don’t have to be on grand pieces or in grand spaces, but make just as much of a statement on small pieces like this pedestal table. Photo: Hooker Furniture.

Lest you think curves are only made for grand pieces and spaces, notice how even the petite Pedestal Table that’s perfect beside a chair, in a hall, bedroom or office injects a flourish of style and drama through its curvaceous shape.

Tradition rules in the bedroom of this 300-year-old English country estate. Photo credit: Luke White, architecturaldigest.com.

In this stately space, Mark Gillette uses classically-shaped silhouettes (French Bergere chairs, a gilded mirror, an 18th Century silk four-poster bed) as to move the eye around the bedroom.

Into subtle and sophisticated? Try the Chloe chaise, Lev sofa and Brantley Tufted Cocktail Table. Photos, top to bottom: sammoore.com, bradington-young.com, hookerfurniture.com.

With its simple yet chic, undulating lines, the Chloe Chaise is an updated spin on a fresh classic. The Lev Sofa  is proof that clean lines and curves can co-exist beautifully in furniture. The Brantley Tufted Cocktail Table trio is a cluster of elegant arches that multi-task as tables, seating or cushy foot rests.

Pump up the volume with dramatic curves like those of the Bohemian Black Croc table and the Corsica Dark Panel Bed. Photos: Hooker Furniture.

With legs that create the illusion of movement, the Bohemian Black Croc dining table  looks as if it’s bending he knees to welcome diners. Witty and wonderfully-detailed, this table is wrapped in croc-patterned luxe leather and embellished with gleaming silver nailheads. Like the Mediterranean island for which it’s named, the Corsica Panel Bed is a melting pot of gracefully-shaped architectural forms of French Belgian and Italian origin.

To bend the curve here and there, shapely accent tables like (l-r) the Melange Kenmar Pedestal table, Melange Scalloped Drawer Chest, Rhapsody Nest of tables and Regatta Blue Bombe Chest are perfect picks. Photos: Hooker Furniture.

With its faux zinc finish and pin-up girl curves, the Melange Kenmar Pedestal Table  delivers lots of Old Hollywood glam. The Melange Scalloped Drawer Chest   is a stylish shape-shifter from its wasp-waist silhouette to its rolled drawer front and scalloped base. The serpentine legs of the Rhapsody Nest of Tables  give it a lyrical sense and lots of Old World charm. And then there’s the runway-ready Regatta Blue Bombe Chest, a fashion beauty with an hour-glass figure. Va-va-voom.

Spring is here. Isn’t it time for your home to shape up?
