
With Valentine’s Day in February, thoughts turn to romance, and there is no better place for a love story than at home. We all know about romantic poetry, romantic novels, romantic movies and romantic music, but what makes a home feel romantic?
In recognition of Valentine’s Day in February, Hooker Furniture’s bloggers will be writing about romantic home décor throughout the month. Several masters of home furnishings design will be sharing exciting ideas about the kinds of decorative accessories, color schemes, fabric choices, textures and styles that come together to create a blend of comfort, meaning and beauty that exudes romance. I once learned that the word “home” evokes more emotion than any other word in the English language other than the word “love.”
This is definitely the case in my own life, and I believe in the lives of many. The deep meaning of home was articulated beautifully recently by Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder and CEO of Apartment Therapy Media, a network of blogs devoted to helping people make their homes beautiful, organized and healthy. Maxwell’s storytelling talent sparkled as he shared his compelling personal story, his design philosophy and the humble beginnings of Apartment Therapy at the Withit educational breakfast during the fall High Point Market.

The furniture in your home may take on new meaning as you realize that behind each table, chest or sofa there is a designer or designers who poured their creative energy, vision and even dreams into the piece.
Often the unsung heroes, these designers took center stage at the 16th annual 2011 Pinnacle Design Awards gala dinner and ceremony at the High Point Market International Ballroom recently.
I was delighted to be able to accompany my colleagues Cindy Hall and Erica Wingo to the dinner, as Cindy and Erica were finalists for Pinnacles in two of the 16 furniture, accessory and lighting categories.
