How to Add the Glam of Emerald at Home

In case you haven’t heard, emerald green is the new “it” color. Pantone has officially decreed emerald as its 2013 Color of the Year. So this dramatic shade will soon be popping up in aisle after aisle of retail establishments—from fashion to furniture and home goods. While last year’s color (Tangerine Tango) offered a fresh, tropical flair, this year’s emerald hue is all about old-world glam.

When it comes to emerald, it’s no coincidence we think of its namesake gemstone. Emeralds bring to mind royalty and sophistication and an abundance of wealth. Pantone describes the hue as: “Lively. Radiant. Lush… A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”

The recent Memorial Day weekend has ushered in summer, and sunny skies are here to stay (or so we hope)! If your home is in need of a sunny punch of color, then you’re in luck. The bright sky and vibrant summer colors of the outdoors are mirrored in the latest trends in the home furnishings industry. The days of dark colors and intricate patterns have been replaced with fresh, fun pops of vibrantly-hued shades!

It’s no wonder that Pantone has identified “Tangerine Tango” as the 2012 color of the year. This bold and fun color has been popping up everywhere-from clothing to decorations to furniture! In my opinion, there is no designer more inspiring than Mother Nature.  As an avid gardener, I’m constantly reminded of the vivid colors, textures, and patterns when I begin to see the buds forming on trees and as the foliage and flowers burst into their full splendor.  It’s the time of year when I begin to sort through catalogs and chat it up with my favorite greenhouses to decide what I’ll plant as soon as the weatherman gives the thumbs up.  There are some definite tried and true plantings, as well as new varieties or colors.  Hmmm . . . Sounds like trends are alive and well in garden design, too!
