When working on a 1920’s bungalow, you have a tendency to lean back to the classic feel of the home. But wouldn’t it be fun to put a bit of a spin on bungalow style and go towards the clean transitional feel that is so popular now? Recently I had the pleasure to work in a garden room in just this situation. Sure, we could have done the typical shabby chic look, and it would have been beautiful, but why not throw a curve ball and interject the transitional?
First, the floors had wonderful old tiger wood in beautiful condition. The terra cotta and espresso colors were just exploding. We went for the unusual and painted the walls a copper color – Sherwin Williams SW6353 Chivalry. AMAZING! Then we added an Art Deco style loveseat with a grass green chain link-patterned fabric, complimented by floral pillows and fluffy brush fringe.
To keep the transitional feel in our living room accent furniture, we looked to Hooker Furniture and a pair of nesting tables with unique white cocoa bead inlays on the top. The inlays look like slices of bamboo. The tables are perfect in size and scale and tuck in next to the loveseat. On the other side we paired a bamboo style table with a lower tray for storage. Mixing these two elements really kept the room casual and chic. Custom upholstered ottomans in chocolate linen with a really large Moroccan style print on the tops put a really fun spin to the room. The TV is housed in an antique armoire with cream distressing and glass doors. Wood sugar shutters accent the windows, letting lots of light to flood the room.
We re-purposed a rug that had a touch of silk, adding just a smidge of high end elegance. But one of my favorite components to the room is the pendant lights. Contemporary barrel lights with a decorative shade really make this room feel edgy and welcoming. Add a dimmer switch to the light and you have it all. Whether you use this room for TV, drinks or a romantic retreat, the feel is fresh, fun and inviting. Don’t be afraid to step out of the box, the results are amazing!.
