10 Ways to Furnish a Dorm Room

By Trisha Kemerly

In the next few weeks, thousands of young adults will be embarking into the brave new world of college dormitories for the first time, or returning as upperclassmen to a dorm or apartment. How well I remember when I moved in to my first dorm room. I had sheets and a pillow. That’s it. Suffice it to say that the concrete blocks of my first “home away from home” made for a less-than-homey environment.

Do your young adult a favor and help make his or her dorm room a place that is comfortable and relaxing with youth furniture.  Going off to college is stressful and overwhelming enough, so it’s important for young adults to have a place that makes them feel good about this new chapter in their lives.

The two-piece suit…ideal for small home office furniture!

It there’s no empty room waiting to be transformed into a full-fledged home office in your house, take heart. You don’t need to renovate, relocate or rent space to get your work done (or get organized). It’s never been easier, in fact, to carve out a great workspace… thanks to two trends: the streamlining of our technical gadgets and clever new small home office furniture set-ups.

Felton Home Office

A two-piece small corner computer desk is one of those clever set-ups. It connects a simple writing desk with a storage cabinet, creating an L-shaped home office furniture desk that can be placed anywhere. The simple geometric shape of the Felton workstation by Hooker Furniture  is inspired by the efficient work cubicle found in offices across the world, where there’s no room for small space [...]

You might call them the “Oscars of Furniture.”

They are the Pinnacle Design Awards, awarded annually by the American Society of Furniture Designers to recognize achievement in furniture design and to promote design excellence and originality. Awards are given in 15 categories ranging from casual dining to bedroom to leather upholstery to juvenile furniture to major collections.

We think the Pinnacle Awards, established in 1995, are a terrific idea to recognize the often unsung heroes behind the scenes who design and birth furniture. These designers are vital to making furniture an exciting fashion industry. They create cherished and beautiful pieces that transform our houses into homes.

This year, Hooker Furniture is very excited to have four furniture items or collections as finalists for the 2011 Pinnacle Awards! Drum roll please, our finalists are:

Today, many more workers find that their daily commute is just steps to their home office. While home offices were once nooks in the kitchen or carved-out places in the family room or den, now there is more reason than ever to have an organized and efficient space for home office furniture and equipment.

Here are steps to consider when planning your office to get the best results.

• Determine your space. How much room is needed to accomplish your tasks? Measure that against the space available in your home. A whole room would be ideal, but more often than not, you’ll find that part of a room will accommodate a home office computer desk easily. Hooker Furniture, for example, has developed a number of compact but highly functional small home office solutions.

If you live in a house built before 2000, chances are you have a small room near the front of the house originally designated as a formal living room or sitting room.

As most lifestyles have become more casual and oriented around technology, the formal living room has become a thing of the past for many. So how can you reinvent that space to create a room more relevant to how you live?

Gayle Cook of Waller, Texas, the winner of our Moccato functional living room table in the recent Hooker Furniture contest, has happily reinvented her former sitting room into a multipurpose room that she describes as “my favorite room of the house.”

“I find the room very inviting and functional,” Gayle said. “In the room I have my computer and exercise equipment, watch TV and entertain comfortably, all in a cozy, small [...]

How to Vacation at Home

By Wanda Horton

Living a relatively short distance from some of the most beautiful shorelines in the U.S. comes with the advantage of sources for constant design inspiration.  One of my favorite nearby destinations is Kiawah Island, S.C.  The beaches are never overly crowded and the close proximity to historic Charleston offers a bonus side trip.  When my husband and I drive over the little bridge to the island I can feel the layers of the world peel away.  It would be so wonderful to capture that moment in a bottle!

Sanctuary Dune & Beach Cocktail Table

While recently viewing some of the beautiful pieces in Hooker Furniture’s Sanctuary Collection , I became whisked back to those moments in time, after spying their Dune and Beach table.  The finishing reminds me of the drifts of sand and the sea oats swaying in the [...]
