Can high-tech and high-taste really co-exist in home office furniture?
After a long “attraction” from afar, we think these “ opposites” have finally come together in a marriage of form and function in our Mélange home office collection. Four Mélange home office furniture desks and a lateral file are set for introduction at the spring 2011 High Point Market. This high-tech/high-taste truce also features three new TV consoles.

Leading the way is a glamorous (we’re talking Hollywood) fluted kidney-shaped desk with a soft silver metallic finish. The drawers are lined with exquisite silver floral wallpaper, and there’s even a deep purse drawer along with a utility file drawer.
The idea of Mélange Home Office is to bring designer looks, trend-forward style and feminine appeal to this functional category. Since the Mélange home office collection is designed by two young women, they know how to [...]

After a decade of cool metal popularity for nickel, platinum and silver, gold is making a comeback. It was a long day in the sun for silver, but now the subtle, warm glowing tones of platinum, copper, bronze and gold are showing up everywhere in makeup, jewelry, apparel and now furniture.
Caché Chest
Says Sensational Color Trends 2010-2011: “A symbol of modernism mixed with elitism, matte metallic finishes in gold and bronze take natural to a new level of glamour.” Luxurious and elegant gold metallics and gold leafing are especially capturing the spotlight. Classic and always in style, gold’s strength is its versatility to mix and match with different colors, metal and woods.
Why do we love gold? It sparkles, it shines, it brightens, and best of all, it looks good in combination with nearly every color scheme imaginable. Metallic fabrics, particularly sheers, have [...]

The word I have been reading over and over again in design and furniture catalogs and magazines is hand.
The finish is hand rubbed, the basket is hand woven and the edging on the sheet, hand crocheted. While this vibrant trend may seem to apply only to those who want the comfort and authenticity of the past, it is very much present in products that appeal to the most avant-garde. Crafting in metal, stone, glass, and clay is being sought after for contemporary interiors. Wood has always been the number one material we rely on and covet and it is more prevalent than ever.

While we revere the progress that has been made in the production of goods and services, we are beginning to put an ever-higher premium on the craftsmanship of the past–and those who are determined to preserve it.
The operative trend [...]

Contemporary is going softer and warmer, coastal is getting more versatile and gray is walking the line between cool and taupe tones.
These were some of the trends that emerged in the Hooker Furniture showroom at the recent 2-day premarket held in High Point, N.C., the furniture capital of the world.
Felton Upholstered Bed
As its name suggests, premarket is a “preview” of the international High Point Market. In the Spring, Premarket is held in March about a month before the big market opens in April. While the spring and fall High Point markets draw some 85,000 attendees internationally to shop the showrooms of close to 2000 exhibitors, premarket typically has around 30 sponsoring exhibitors and around 250 retail buyers attending.
So what furniture style trends are emerging for 2011? Here’s a few of note:
A softer, warmer contemporary. The upholstered bed with chrome nail head [...]
Even though I am in my senior year studying interior design at High Point University, I just recently learned about the new (to me) phenomenon called Typography. For those of you who are not familiar with the term, it basically means using words as art. As I thought about writing about my new found fascination with typography, I wanted to research the topic to see what I came up with. My results displayed everything from trees made out of words to crazy quotes with various colors.

After searching through the thousands of images on the internet, I began to realize that typography is more than just a digital image. It is something we can see and feel, and it is something that can evoke powerful emotions. Typography is a window in our personality and what we like and dislike. It makes sense [...]
Create a Parent Cave!
As families mature, parents and teenagers often go their separate ways when it comes to watching TV, movies and playing video games. That’s the case with Vivian Donn of San Jose, California. She and her husband, who have a 14-year-old son and an 18 year-old daughter attending UCLA, have found that “our son and his friends are taking over the TV and entertainment center in the family room with all their video game matches.”

What to do? Vivian is glad her son and his friends like to hang out at their home, but she and her husband need a place to crash and relax too. Their solution is to create their own personal entertainment center room. You’ve heard of a Man Cave? You might call this the Parent Cave! They [...]
