Hi, I’m Hank Long, and I develop products for home entertainment and home office furniture for Hooker. While I’ve not been a gamer until recently, when I got my wife a Wii and discovered how much fun it could be for the whole family, I have watched and learned from my 20 and 24-year- old sons as they have enjoyed just about every new gaming system as they grew up. They started playing Pac Man when they were in grade school, and have moved to Play stations and Xboxes. And they have evolved from playing with their friends side by side on the floor to playing online with friends and strangers miles apart.

In the process, I have learned what we need in gaming furniture in terms of wire management, places to store controllers, and the need for internet connectivity with the newest [...]
Nintendo sold its 30 millionth Wii console in the U.S. earlier this month. The popular motion-sensing game hit 30 million units in just 45 months, making it the fastest-selling console in video game history.
To address the exploding gaming market, Hooker now offers over a dozen options in gaming furniture in a variety of styles, finishes and sizes. Our goal is to enhance your experience of gaming by helping to organize and streamline your systems and integrate gaming with a complete home theater experience.

While our gaming furniture is loaded with function like drop-down drawers with outlets and wire management for storing gaming systems, controllers and media, gaming consoles are more stylish than they used to be. They’re so stylish that they’re moving out of the recreation room and kid’s bedroom to family rooms. The trend of gaming consoles moving front and center [...]

As a magazine editor, I know how important The Three F’s are when it comes to making any interior look inviting. What are The Three F’s? FLOWERS, FRUIT, AND FABRIC! What would we do without them? Here are some ways to take easy furniture decorating steps:
• FLOWERS: Fresh flowers, either from the supermarket or your garden, are a statement of your taste. Do you favor a mixed bouquet with colors blended the way nature does? Or do you tend to like flowers of all one kind—the way the French do? If you select yellow tulips over red ones, or soft pick roses over white ones, you’re telling yourself and others something about how you want your home to look.

Flowers do wonders to make a home welcoming. (And so do plants if you have a green thumb.) Vases and [...]

When J. Clyde Hooker, the beloved and respected retired leader of Hooker Furniture, died last month, he left behind numerous trophies, awards and honors. They ranged from a Bronze Star in World War II to The Pillar of the Industry Award to a place in the Furniture Hall of Fame to a key to the City of Martinsville, Va. Other tangible reminders of Clyde’s contributions include new or expanded buildings in Martinsville to benefit the community, buildings like the YMCA and the hospital and the SPCA and Piedmont Arts Assn. offices. Too many to count are the young people who are now contributing to society because they were educated through a scholarship Clyde helped establish through the Hooker Educational Foundation, VMI or High Point University.

In addition to these tangible contributions, Clyde’s intangible legacy is just as great. Clyde’s [...]

Young people personalize their music (think iTunes), their shoes (think Converse) and their phones, so why not their room?
That was the thinking behind the Lily youth furniture bedroom from Opus Designs by Hooker Furniture. The bedroom invites youth to express themselves with color, creating a bedroom in an endless array of color schemes to reflect their personality.

Lily is offered in a clean eggshell white finish and features removable color accent panels on case fronts and beds. Four color panels, each with two color options for a total of eight color choices, are stored inside the drawer fronts. Simply remove the knob and you can slide the panels in and out to create various color schemes.
“We knew we had a winner when students at High Point University went crazy over Lily at our Design Meeting,” said Cindy Hall, merchandising manager of youth [...]

In the next few weeks, thousands of young adults will be embarking into the brave new world of college dormitories for the first time, or returning as upperclassmen to a dorm or apartment. How well I remember when I moved in to my first dorm room. I had sheets and a pillow. That’s it. Suffice it to say that the concrete blocks of my first “home away from home” made for a less-than-homey environment!

Do your young adult a favor and help make his or her dorm room a place that is comfortable and relaxing with youth furniture. Going off to college is stressful and overwhelming enough, so it’s important for young adults to have a place that makes them feel good about this new chapter in their lives.
Maximizing comfort and organization in a small space with teen bedroom furniture is one [...]

At the beginning of my daughter’s junior year of high school, I decided to begin “telling the story” of all her special occasions in a scrapbook. Now the pages are full of colorful memories from homecoming court, her 17th birthday mountain weekend, Christmas, the arrival of our new puppy, dance recital and prom. Throughout the year, I have found myself looking forward to setting aside an afternoon devoted to creating new pages in her scrapbook.
If you are a scrapbooker or do any kind of handwork like gift wrapping, card-making, floral arranging or needlework, you probably relish the time you spend creating something worthwhile with your hands. And for good reason. According to the Craft & Hobby Assn., the emotional, psychological and physical benefits of hand crafting include:
• Enhancement of [...]
