It’s been just a few weeks since I attended the High Point Furniture Market and I’m still downloading photos and perusing through my press kits. If I had to describe one reoccurring theme, the word ‘happy’ is the first to come to mind. The showrooms were popping with color! I felt as if I had landed in an ice cream shop with a hundred-and-one flavors from which to choose.
If the last few years of a ‘vanilla’ palette have made you feel a bit lackluster, you’re not the only one. While certainly comforting, some folks have desired tart and refreshing hues. The more scoops of pigment, the better! The classic pattern mix of florals, stripes, and geometric shapes have revived. Painted finishes allow for customized accents to complement it all. You could see the collective smiles of approval throughout the market.
During my tour at the fabulous new showroom for Hooker Furniture, Bradington-Young and Sam Moore, I took note of how color was deftly applied. In some cases, brights were used as solids in order to emphasize architectural lines in upholstery or case goods. If you notice in my photo above, the angles, curves, slopes- and boxing of the arms and backs of the chairs – really show through. They may have traditional to transitional origins, but the saturation of color provides for a youthful twist.
Global influences continue to create interest. Shapes from Morocco, Asia, India – and beyond – were captured in many forms. They work well with all styles of interiors and add a sense of history and layering. Some have been reinterpreted as they may have originated in heavier colors, created from vegetation or minerals. Suzani and Ikat designs have been applied to upholstery, wall coverings, lamp shades, pillows, rugs, and in every way imaginable!
I’ve shared just a few finds to give you inspiration for adding some zest to your rooms. If you’ve been keeping things neutral for a while, an accent chair, a great piece of art, or a new area rug in a bright color or pattern can make a space come back to life. Gray still abounds but imagine a dollop of yellow or tangerine, in just the right spot!
Is anyone ready for some ice cream?
