Orange and brown make the classic autumn duo, but they’re not your only option for Thanksgiving décor and tablescapes. Consider these fresh alternatives that use harvest hues of fruit and vegetables such as eggplants, concord grapes, squash and Indian corn – or the colors of fall flowers like yellow mums and smiling pansies.
- Purple, gold and green: Purple and yellow are complementary colors, so a split-triad scheme of purple, yellow-green and yellow-orange (the hues on each side of yellow) are design savvy and spectacular. Create a still life centerpiece using purple Concord grapes, green and yellow squash, broccoli, green and purple pears and Indian corn that comes naturally in a mix of purples and yellows. If you like, tuck in a few purple asters and yellow mums from the garden; both are long-lasting. Group everything together on a rustic woven tray or even a linen kitchen towel in one or more key colors. Brass candlesticks are a perfect, colonial-inspired golden accent.
- Purple, red and orange: Celebrate the harvest with an analogous color scheme that runs from purple to red-violet, red, red-orange and orange. It’s vibrant but not jarring; just what you want for a hospitable feeling! Purple and red grapes, red onions, small redskin potatoes,red-leaf lettuce, pomegranates, loose cranberries, orange squash and a host of other vibrant veggies and fruits make a great still life. (For tradition’s sake, stick with produce that evokes our New England heritage; bananas and oranges have a whole different vibe.) Add small copper cookware items, candlesticks, etc. as accents.
Purple reigns in fall décor, starting with rich-hued eggplant. Visit designsponge.com for more purple Thanksgiving ideas.
- Purple and silver:This first-frost, sophisticated scheme is at home in a modern urban setting as well as in Williamsburg. Look in your wedding stash for a tray (modern or traditional) in pewter, sterling silver or silverplate as a base.
Compose a still life of purple eggplant, green and purple ruffled kale, red cabbage, plums, grapes, Indian corn with purple, blue and ivory kernels and other cool-hued fruits and vegetables. Add gray-green grape ivy, sprigs of sage, lavender, spearmint, rosemary and other dusty green herbs. A pewter or silver gravy boat or pitcher could hold a cascade of purple grapes or a small arrangement of purple and white asters. And if you can’t live without a pumpkin somewhere, use a small white one here!
