“Have fewer things but better things–“
Suzanne Rheinstein
This quote from Suzanne Rheinstein has stayed with me since I read it in a recent issue of HOUSE BEAUTIFUL.
Such a simple concept, but when it comes to our own homes, not so easy to implement. As we’ve been talking about creating your signature in your home, I can’t help but think about the importance of making good choices along the way.
We all strive to live in a simpler, more fulfilling way, by surrounding ourselves with meaningful possessions and eliminating unnecessary clutter. This means we have to be the “editors” of our own spaces by only allowing those things that stay true to our personal style, and contribute to the overall ambiance of our home. To me, each design decision should be based on these three questions:
1. Does it give me joy?
This Antigo chair by Sam Moore just makes me smile. I definitely put it in the “Joy” category. The tough decision is deciding which room it lands in!
2. Does it have a place and purpose?
Do you have a collection that’s hiding in a box? With the Angle Design Curio from Hooker Furniture, you can display it proudly. Whether it’s your grandmother’s china or model airplanes, here’s your chance to express yourself in style. Imagine this piece in your den or hallway. Talk about defining your style!
3. Is it the best quality I can afford?
You know how I’m all about quality. It just makes sense when we need to get the most out of each piece of furniture. That’s why I love this Ludlow table from Hooker Furniture. It can stand up to everyday use, whether in a dining room or elsewhere.
Does it become a library table or a spot for scrapbooking in-between dinner parties? Maybe it isn’t in the dining room at all. I love the idea of placing it behind a sofa in a great room with two great lamps on it. Late night supper in front of the tv…how convenient.
The next time you get the urge to buy something for your home, ask yourself these three questions. I guarantee if you stick with this, the results will be astounding!
One day you will look around and be able to say, “I love everything about my home!”
And isn’t that the whole point? I invite you to visit me anytime at the J.Waddell Interiors blog.
