86 Years of Hooker Furniture History

On behalf of over seven hundred employees at Hooker Furniture, Bradington Young and Sam Moore, welcome to our “Experience Your Home” blog.  We look forward to starting a dialog with you and developing a relationship that will help you learn more about furniture, style trends,  decorating and getting the most out of your home.  From you, we hope to gain insight  about your tastes, aspirations and challenges when it comes to selecting furniture and furnishing your home.

Clyde & Paul

86 years ago, Clyde Hooker Jr. Chairman Emeritus, pulled this steam whistle as a four-year old boy to signal the first work day at Hooker Furniture. Chairman and CEO Paul Toms shares this notable restoration.

Hooker Furniture is celebrating our 86th year in business.  The company was started in 1924 by my grandfather, J. Clyde Hooker, when he was twenty-eight years old.  Like many furniture companies in our area, we were located in southwestern Virginia because of our proximity to the natural resources that are the raw materials utilized in our products and the availability of skilled workers who possessed both a strong work ethic and tremendous pride in their work.

Although our business model has changed as we have adapted to the realities of a global economy, our core values remain the same.  We built our company one relationship at a time and realize that every interaction we have is an opportunity to live out our values.  We believe we can learn a lot more by listening than talking.  Our reputation for honesty, fairness, integrity, community service, responsibility and innovation is legendary and something we guard jealousy.  Continuous improvement is part of our DNA , and we honestly believe that everything we do can be improved upon.
This blog and social media communications in general are new ventures for our company.  We look forward to your comments and feedback and the opportunity to have a conversation on anything that’s important to you.  Thank you for your interest.

    Hello:

I understand that the Novelty Grocery Co. off of Church St. (apparently across the street from what is now a Burger King) was the “company store” for Hooker-Bassett Furniture in Martinsville. Is this correct? Does anyone know when that store was in operation? Novelty Grocery issued store tokens and I am trying to get more info on them and if that connection to Hooker-Bassett is accurate.

I know this is a bit of an oddball question, but I would appreciate any assistance anyone can offer.

I have a few old pieces with numbers such as no 516 dresser ( kind of hard to tell), no 20 dresser, no 317 chest, and no 20 robe. They have been sitting in my grandmothers attic for who knows how long and looking to find out if ther have any value to them?

Hello, I am trying to find out some information regarding a dresser that I purchased at my Grandparent’s estate sale in Iowa about 8 years ago. I believe it is a Hooker-Bassett piece from Virginia, No. 182 chest. It appears it made its way to Iowa via Amborn Jr. & Bros Furniture in Fort Madison, Iowa which is stamped on the tag on the back of the piece. I’m trying to see if it is in fact from Hooker-Bassett as the tag is very difficult to read. The piece number is accurate and very legible though. My grandmother was an avid antique collector so I was just curious about any history/value to the piece. I can provide photos if necessary. Thanks for your time!
