A Fine Romance – Mastering Bedroom Furniture Design

At the end of the day, there’s nothing like the waiting arms of your own private sanctuary to softly wrap around you.  It takes a magic combination of comfort, style, and ambiance to create a romantic surrounding fit for the master bedroom. While sometimes elusive, you know when it’s the right union of furniture, textiles, colors and  shapes – including personal touches – to bring on the heart flutters!

There are several collections, by Hooker Furniture, which help this interior designer convey the essence of romantic design to my clients, while being paired with other resources for infusing “pretty” into the project. Primrose Hill and Sanctuary are two collections that are filled with options!

Perusing the pages of books, such as Jessica McClintock's Simply Romantic Decorating, lets the imagination soar.

Need a little help in starting your own project?  I’ll share a peek into the beginning process of designing a master bedroom with romance and nurturing in mind.  Just consider me the “Dear Wanda” design adviser!

Let’s begin with inspiration:

I’m a collector of beautiful interior design books and when I need an inspirational nudge, I’ll cozy up in a chair and lose myself in the pages.  Removable tabs, kept nearby, help me note where I’ve lingered a bit longer.  I often find myself admiring the interiors of authors/designers such as Jessica McClintock, Betty Lou Phillips, and Brooke Gianetti, when it comes to romantic influences.  If you don’t have an extensive library, there are wonderful online sites, such as Pinterest, to provide you with lush images to help you articulate your design desires.  Pinterest allows you to “pin” the ideas you like onto a virtual bulletin board.  As a special gift, I’ve provided you with a Pinterest board of romantic interior design details.  Be sure to continue reading to find the link!

Next . . . Create a vision of your wishlist:

Perhaps one step further than a wish list, I brought this master bedroom design into virtual reality, via an elevation.  I pulled in furniture and accents to illustrate the layering often found in romantic design.  Softly textured bedding, lots of pillows, flowers, crystal, ambient lighting, curves and more curves  . . . these are the elements of love!  The bed, from the HFC Sanctuary Collection and the nightstand, writing desk and chair from Primrose Hill, married beautifully to create this elegant area.  While my design program is proprietary, you can venture off to Olioboard to create a mood board option of your own. Or, go to the special “A Fine Romance” Olioboard I’ve created to browse for items to create a romantic bedroom.

Ultimately, romance is in the eye of the beholder, just as in beauty.  I think Dorothy Draper; the grand diva of interiors said it best:

“You may concentrate on appearances all through the rest of your house, but in the bedroom, comfort should be supreme.  I think that bedrooms should also be very intimate rooms-they should express your personal preferences in every way…Of all the rooms in the house, your bedroom is yours.”

As promised, here’s my Pinterest board with all of the design details for creating a romantic bedroom of your own!
