How to Create Mother’s Day Bouquets

Instead of picking up the phone to order a Mother’s Day bouquet, here are some ways to present mom with your own personal, special touches. If you live far apart, you can suggest arrangements to a florist that will make your gift personalized for Mom. I’ve been inspired by Paula Pryke’s new book Flowers Every Day.

Paula is a well-known British floral designer and shares her work on her website where, in addition to her book you’ll find bouquets to help you make your own arrangement very special.

Get your clippers and vases ready–Mother’s Day is right around the corner and here are 5 ideas to get you started on a bouquet she’ll always remember:

1) A Spring Garden Assortment: Lilacs, daffodils, and tulips. These blossoms might be in your own backyard garden, but you will surely find them in the flower stall at your local market. Alone or especially blended together, they are a spectacular way to honor your mom on a delightful May day. To make the gift truly special you might want to use a vessel that has family significance; like the lemonade pitcher with years of memories. And for the ribbon, a bow of your mom’s favorite color…or even the hair bow from a granddaughter’s ribbon box.

Think of where Mom will place the bouquet, such as on a piece like this drop leaf console table.

2) A Rose Wreath That Lasts: Mom will be thrilled to have all her neighbors enjoy her Mother’s Day bouquet in the form of a door wreath. Start with a moss base and bind spray rose heads to the frame with wire. Secure a festive bow at the top. This might seem extravagant but the roses will dry naturally and the wreath will last for months, bringing continued joy to mom.

You can change the ribbon for the seasons and even bring it off the porch and use it as a tabletop decoration. It’s also ideal as the centerpiece for Hooker Furniture’s cozy cottage Harbour Pointe dining table.

3) The Gift of a Cutting Garden: Dad might get the kids involved in growing flowers from seed. You can plant your seeds in seed trays, clay pots, or directly in garden soil. Sunflowers, marigolds, and zinnias are sure bets. (Be sure to follow the packet instructions carefully.) Mom’s delight will last all season as she picks her flowers to freshen the house.

4) A Single Perfect Flower: It’s a wonderful way to introduce mom to the lovely new vase you have purchased for her. Going to a flower shop is great fun and picking out that special rose, for example, is a charming experience. Often, less is more. Think of a single flower as a compliment to Hooker Furniture’s Colston carved console with its exquisite carving.

5) A Tiny Bouquet: Imagine a bouquet of lily of the valley placed on a luncheon napkin. What a special way for a youngster to give a special tribute to mom. If the kids are making breakfast on Mother’s Day, then this is an ideal gift of flowers. Perhaps mom can pin them to her lapel when the family goes to church or out to lunch. A tiny ribbon will keep the blossoms together: Make a bow and let the ends trail down along a table such as Hooker Furniture’s casual copper-top bistro table.

Be creative and selective when picking flowers for mom. Keep the choices yours–not the florist’s–and you are sure to make a bit hit. And don’t just think of surprising mom with pretty flowers on Mother’s Day: There are many occasions when the flowers of your choice say, “I love you.”
