Creating Your Sanctuary with Furniture: the Story Continues

Sanctuary helps you create a tranquil space

Sanctuary helps you create a tranquil space

A furniture collection like Sanctuary comes along only once in a great while. When introduced by Hooker Furniture five years ago, the Sanctuary Collection was groundbreaking in its style, substance and story. When debuted, Sanctuary was seen as fresh and original because it marries timeless designs rich in historical reference with casual and eclectic finishes with names like beach, drift, dune and ebony. Classic silhouettes are inspired from around the world, with designs originating from familiar muses like France, Sweden and England on the one hand, and also from less familiar sources such as Portugal, the British West Indies, the Mediterranean region and urban America. Silhouettes and finishes can be effortlessly and elegantly mixed, as seen in this Sanctuary setting  mixing the 54-inch Sanctuary pedestal table in two-tone dune and beach finishes with an ebony console table and two different dining chairs. One of the dining chairs is the chic, transitionally-styled Mirage chair in dune finish, and the other is a splat-back antiques-inspired chair in drift finish.

In all, there are about a dozen different rustic sophisticated finishes in the Sanctuary portfolio, even including this delightful poppy finish on the accent table in poppy finish inspired from Portuguese designs.

Beyond the mix of finishes and designs, it is the “story” of Sanctuary that is the most compelling part of the group’s essence. The designer of Sanctuary, Tracey Gibson, puts it this way, “I believe it is a unique privilege to create a sanctuary in your own home. In designing Sanctuary for Hooker Furniture, my desire was to help you create a tranquil space for your home that exudes a peaceful calm and grace, almost like a weekend retreat or a resort vacation space. When you walk into your home at the end of that long day, you will be delighted and your spirit will be renewed.”

Lofty aspirations indeed for a furniture collection.  Apparently, though, Sanctuary has  resonated at a deep level with shoppers and owners alike, as it has been the best-selling collection at Hooker Furniture for five years. Five years is a long time for a furniture collection to endure, let alone be a best seller.

When Sanctuary was first introduced, its pieces really “pushed the envelope,” so to speak. One of its unique qualities — the addition of sparkle and light and bling in a selection of mirrored and metallic pieces—seemed edgy. For example, when this tufted, sculptured bed with a mirrored and metallic border (affectionately known as the “bling bed”) was introduced, furniture retailers shook their heads and wondered if anyone would buy something so audaciously elegant and feminine.

Thankfully, a few furniture store merchants were willing to take the risk and put the Sanctuary Bling Bed on their floors. Before you knew it, word got around that the piece was selling like crazy. Now everyone was shaking their heads at how this “risky” fashion statement had become one of the best sellers in Hooker Furniture’s line.

Such success led to expansion, and many pieces have been added to the Sanctuary Collection over the years. But the upcoming October High Point Furniture Market will mark the most extensive introduction of new Sanctuary pieces ever. For this market, Sanctuary is taking a globally-inspired and swanky direction with a glamorous spin, adding a complete dining room and bedroom grouping in this worldly flavor.

“Global motifs have continued to soar in all fashion-dominated categories including home,” said Sanctuary creator Gibson. “This global approach – in an eclectic casual feel with an unexpected glamorous spin—gives us a wide berth to create a whole new lifestyle inside Sanctuary.”

Sanctuary’s global style borrows from exotic Moroccan, Turkish and Asian influences as well as European.

The evolution from Sanctuary’s serene roots to today’s more swanky interpretation is seen most dramatically in the Sanctuary 4-door mirrored console. Here’s a look at this best-selling piece in the original serene-bling flavor with soft surf and visage finishes to this market’s swanky-global look in ebony and gold metallic finish:

In bedroom furniture, the Sanctuary of Fall 2013 is sticking to the winning formula of a soft, inviting upholstered bed. But this time, rather than a serene and neutral palette, the finish of the upholstered bed is in a rustic black and the style is retro-inspired with a Chinoiserie Chic vibe.

The new Sanctuary dining furniture is even more globally-inspired than the bedroom. What do you think of this striking new look in exotic bunching cabinets with unique custom designed hardware inspired by a Turkish medallion, topped by shaped silver leaf mirrors?

The Turkish influence is clearly seen in the detail of the medallion hardware:

And so, the story of Sanctuary continues. Just like felines are said to have nine lives, it’s our belief that Sanctuary’s life will continue to endure and thrive as this inimitable group continues to reinvent itself with new looks. While the styles and lifestyle of Sanctuary may vary from season to season, they all share the same common purpose: helping you create your own sanctuary at home.
