The Language of Color

Color is an emotional, universal language

Color is an emotional, universal language / housebeautiful.com

The more I explore color, the more I love it.  It’s hands down my favorite part of home décor. To me, color is the language of interior design.  It speaks to me.

Color provides the foundation of a great room. It’s what we notice first and remember best. Color attracts us, inspires us, engages us and stays with us. It weaves together architecture, furnishings, light and texture in a way nothing else can. And color can set a mood and change a space, as if it were alive and speaking aloud.

While I can’t choose just one favorite color or color combination, I have rounded up a few that are inspiring me right now. And there are even more on my Color Pinterest board.

Color Connects

Love it or hate it, you can’t ignore a red sofa. The rich, deep shade of scarlet used to create this Bradington Young leather sofa makes it a showstopper.

Color Speaks Comfort

Comfort is about more than just the softness of a chair or pillow. Color gives a layer of comfort that lets your eyes rest, eases your breathing, and soothes the soul.

Color Surprises

I love how just one splash of color can speak volumes. The bold blue and white used in this entry hall is kicked up a notch with the addition of a red accent.

Color Speaks in Unexpected Ways

Color is like a fine dining experience for me: while there are many pairings that always work, I love to be surprised by new color combinations.

Color Creates Newness

A zebra print in navy like Sam Moore’s Cadence Chair or a black-and-white chevron print paired with hot pink trim—it’s the color that attracts you and the next thing you know, you have a new favorite chair.

Color Conveys Attitude

Nothing creates a feeling like color. The subtle yellows, greens and grays used in this living space gives it a freshness that wouldn’t be there in a completely neutral, all-white space.
