A Rustic, Homemade Fourth of July

As an all-American flower, hydrangeas are hard to beat. Photo Credit: raisedincotton.typepad.com

This Fourth of July, consider decorating your home and dining table with rustic, American touches. There are many simple ways to garnish your table with some red, white and blue flair. Many of the touches you will find lying around your home.

Beautiful Blues

Instead of using tall, shimmering plastic decorations purchased at Party City, why not try some more rustic, natural decorations. Blue hydrangeas peak around June and the beginning of July. Clip a few bunches of blue hydrangeas and place them in multiple mason jars to line a long table.

Blue hydrangeas in mason jars are a rustic, inexpensive way to decorate for Fourth of July

Helpful tip: Hydrangeas are known for wilting, even in a vase full of water, within a few hours. The best way to keep your freshly cut bunches alive is to clip them and immediately immerse them in a bucket of water. Head inside the house, and put on a pot of boiling water. Transfer the boiling water to a bowl and immerse the stems of the hydrangea bunches in the boiling water for 30 seconds. Immediately place the flower in their vases filled with room temperature water. This should keep your hydrangeas alive for up to seven days!

For a truly dramatic, memorable look, line your blue hydrangeas on a piece of painted furniture in a red finish, like the stunning Red Credenza from Hooker Furniture.

Whites that Wow

There are many simple ways to add a touch of white to your patriotic table. A crisp, white table cloth, white plates or white candles are items you may be able to easily find in your home. Get creative and mix and match sizes and textures of white to help the color really pop.
